Dr Jacob van der Land, marine biologist extraordinary Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
This contribution is an attempt to sketch the life and works of Dr Jacob van der Land, curator of worms and chief marine biologist of the National Museum of Natural History, on the occasion of his official retirement. Born in 1935, Jacob van der Land read biology at Leiden University (1958-1964), where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1970 on a treatise on the Priapulida under the supervision of Prof. Dr L.D. Brongersma. In 1964 he was appointed curator of worms in the museum. Later on he took over leadership of the invertebrate section (excluding insects) of the museum and was also placed in charge of all marine research. Initially, Van der Land organized field trips for biology students of Leiden University to Scandinavia, who were able to sample seagoing...

Movement behaviour and video tracking of Milnesium tardigradum Doyère, 1840 (Eutardigrada, Apochela) Naturalis
Shcherbakov, D.; Schill, R.O.; Brümmer, F.; Blum, M..
Tardigrades or ‘water-bears’ live in moist environments with a high degree of gaseous exchange. In tardigrades, locomotion is essential, e.g. for feeding, to find sexual partners and to adjust the level of hydration by moving to wetter or dryer environments. Here we report on the movement behaviour of Milnesium tardigradum in automated experiments using custom-made video tracking software. The experiments involved 754 hours of recording involving 32 individuals. No significant differences in mobility were observed under infrared versus visible light conditions, representing night and day, respectively. The mean recorded velocity was 23.3 ± 7.38 mm/h, with a maximum of 1166.4 mm/h.

Paleobiology of Pleistocene ground sloths (Xenarthra, Tardigrada): biomechanics, morphogeometry and ecomorphology applied to the masticatory apparatus Ameghiniana
Bargo,M. Susana; Vizcaíno,Sergio F..
The fossil xenarthrans include giant forms, the ground sloths (Tardigrada), characteristic of the mammal fauna of the Pleistocene of South America. Although most authors agree in considering them as herbivorous, these forms have not been studied in terms of detailed morpho-functional analyses of their masticatory apparatuses. The aim of this work is the study the masticatory apparatus of the large Pleistocene ground sloths Glossotherium robustum, Lestodon armatus, Mylodon darwini and Scelidotherium leptocephalum (Mylodontidae) applying biomecanichal and morphogeometrical methods, and to compare with the information obtained for Megatherium americanum (Megatheriidae). The results are integrated with recent ecomorphological analyses that include three...
